Empathy & Alchemy

The concept for the show was born out of a class of the same name held at the New York City Crit Club, led by founder and artist Catherine Haggerty and Ortega y Gasset co-director and artist Zahar Vaks. This group crit seminar explored the various ways intimate emotional knowledge can be transmitted through the alchemy of materials.

When the class ended, Pilar Lagos, Patrick Bower, Naomi Basu, Tracie Lee, Caitlin Reid, and Robert Zurer set out to extend this idea to the wider community. The result was a 17-person group show, inclusive of the curators, that serves as a vehicle for material exploration in the context of community-building.
